WEEK 1 - STARTING SOMETHING NEW

On the 17/4, my group and I went to Rainbow of Love to start our teaching experience. Before that, we were briefed by Mr Chandra, our lecturer for the course on how we should behave and how we should act when we reached there. It was very exciting and nervous at the same time as this is my first time experiencing something out of my comfort zone and the most important thing is that I am going to teach students on how to improve their English literacy. I am very nervous and scared because I think that this will be a big challenge to me as I have low confidence in teaching them.
When we reached, I was shocked because the students are very hyperactive and I am afraid that I am unable to control the crowd. Our group members started by introducing ourselves and the purpose of coming to their school. They listened very carefully when we are talking and I am glad that it went out fine. Then, we started playing the ice breaking game that we prepared. I was very happy that the students are excited to play our game although it is just a small and simple game. Later, we switch classes with the other team and played the same game with them too.
Me and my group members were chosen to teach the middle school students which aged from 11 years old – 13 years old. The students listen well when we are speaking and pay attention too. After that, we introduced what is choral speaking to them and played a video for them to understand more on what we are going to perform on the performance day. Later, we divided the students into 6 teams and allow them to discuss in groups to come out with a topic that they want to perform. In the end, a topic relating to football is chosen as their choral speaking topic. We also prepared some homework for them which is to form 3 simple sentences relating to football.
Overall, I noticed that the students are more comfortable in speaking Bahasa Malaysia among themselves. It will be a challenging task to teach them but I am trying my best to mix both of the languages together so that they are able to learn and understand.I hope that everything will turn out fine and this will allow me to step out of my comfort zone. By stepping out of my comfort zone, I am able to experience more and learn more new things. I believe through this experience, this will increase my confidence level in speaking in front of people and increase my communications skills too. It is also a great platform for me to train my facilitation skills while guiding them throughout the whole planning process.
